With the awarding of the Teaching Prize, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences underscores the high value placed on the quality of teaching and acknowledges the commitment of its teaching staff.

The Teaching Prize is awarded under an annually changing theme and is endowed with a total of €10,000.

In 2024, the Teaching Prize will be awarded under the theme:

"Student Diversity as a Didactic Element in Higher Education Teaching."

 

With this prize, the university aims to honor teaching concepts that demonstrate effective integration of student diversity into teaching practice. This diversity can encompass various dimensions, including cultural backgrounds, linguistic diversity, individual learning styles, diverse levels of knowledge, life experiences, and socioeconomic situations.

The integration of student diversity as a didactic element in higher education teaching can take various forms, including:

  • Development of teaching and learning materials that address different learning styles and needs.
  • Implementation of innovative teaching methods and strategies that consider diversity in the teaching-learning setting.
  • Creation of an inclusive learning environment that promotes the participation and engagement of all students.
  • Promotion of (intercultural) dialogue and exchange in the teaching context.
  • Integration of diversity-sensitive content and perspectives into the curriculum.
  •  

Criteria for the awarding of the Teaching Prize include:

  • Innovation and Creativity: The ability of the instructor to develop and implement innovative approaches to integrating student diversity into teaching.
  • Effectiveness: Demonstrable positive effects on student learning outcomes and experiences through the consideration of diversity in teaching.
  • Inclusion and Equal Opportunities: The instructor's commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment that promotes the participation of all students and ensures equal opportunities.
  • Reflection and Development: The instructor's ability to continuously improve the integration of student diversity through ongoing reflection and development of their teaching practice.

 

 

Who can be nominated?

Nominations can be made by any member of the professorial staff, as well as all academic staff and teaching staff for special responsibilities, who taught at Rhine-Waal University in the summer semester 2023 and/or the winter semester 2023/2024.

Who can nominate?

  • Deans (one nomination each)
  • FSRs (one nomination per FSR)
  • Groups of at least five students (every student can nominate one lecturer)
  • Self-nomination (one nomination per person)

Steps

The nominations can be submitted via the nomination tool in the following link:

All nominations received by March 11, 2024, will be considered. Subsequently, the nominated lectuers will be contacted and informed about all details of the procedure. They will be asked to submit the following documents:

  • Teaching concept for the nominated course (max. 3 pages DIN-A4)
  • Response to questions of higher education didactics regarding their own teaching/learning understanding and the nominated course (max. 3 pages DIN-A4)
  • Consent form to make the evaluation results of the nominated course accessible to the Teaching Prize jury

Jury

The jury will consider all nominations submitted before the deadline using a standardised selection process and announce the winner after deliberations have concluded. The jury consists of:

  • Kristina Kähler, General Didactics in Higher Education, Ruhr-West University of Applied Sciences
