"Non-Conflicts" in Central Asia

From 30 May to 7 June 2022, a workshop on "Non-Conflicts" in Central Asia was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service and led by Prof. Dr Jakob Lempp. The approximately 30 participants came from Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The workshop focused on the question of whether there are regions in Central Asia in which violent conflicts were or are conceivable in principle due to certain structural conditions (e.g. ethnic diversity or socio-economic problems), but ultimately did not occur. Actual violent conflicts such as those in Transnistria, South Ossetia and eastern Ukraine were used as a contrasting foil for this. The expert presentations were given by Jan Niklas Rolf, Sebastian Mayer (German-Kazakh University), Thorsten Kaesler, Zhulduz Baizakova (both Al-Farabi University), Joldon Kutmanaliev (University of Tübingen), Filipp Semyonov (University of Marburg) and Corinna Hauswedell (formerly Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies). A culinary-cultural social programme rounded off the workshop.
