NRW Minister Sylvia Löhrmann officially starts off this year’s “Mittwochsakademie”

Lecture series on gender equality policy and research held at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences

The Mittwochsakademie is an annual lecture series hosted by Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. This year’s central theme will be gender equality, with a particular focus on gender policy and research. On select Wednesdays throughout the year, experts will present audience members with an interesting look at specific issues and topics from their areas of expertise in talks held in either German or English. Sylvia Löhrmann, Minister of Schools and Futher Education for the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, will officially launch the 2015 Mittwochsakademie on April 15 with a lecture on gender roles imparted through school education and the effects of home, peers, media and consumer behaviour.

Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, April 8, 2015: Gender and gender relations play a central role in all of our lives. Gender roles, for example, shape our social environment – from the simplest day-to-day activities to the practices of actors at the highest levels of politics and commerce. Within the field of Gender Studies, expert researchers discuss and analyse these practices and roles to develop new theories and models. Oftentimes, however, there exists a noticeable gap between theory and practice.

The lecture series Mittwochsakademie, hosted by the Faculty of Society and Economics of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, is one way gender researchers are bridging this gap between theory and practice. The “Wednesday Academy” provides experts with a platform to present research findings and practical analyses, and each Wednesday an expert will introduce the audience to a wide range of topics taken directly from ongoing gender discussions and practices. Gender issues are presented from numerous perspectives, and the speakers will hold active discussions with audience members about cutting edge research findings from their area of expertise.

With the Mittwochsakademie and this year’s chosen topic, the Faculty of Society and Economics seeks to encourage students, teaching staff and interested members of the public to collectively reflect on socially-relevant questions relating to gender. Talks will be held in either German or English on select Wednesdays at 6:00 pm throughout the year on the Kleve Campus in Building 1. No formal registration is necessary and there is no cost to attend.
