Communication that heals: A change of perspective in the patient-doctor dialogue - illuminated by students of the Health Sciences and Management degree programme
Successful communication between doctor and patient can have a decisive influence on the success of treatment. This important topic has now been examined from a doctor's perspective by students on the Health Sciences and Management degree programme.
This flyer summarises a previous research project carried out by students in cooperation with the AOK Hamburg/Rhineland, Prof. Dr Renner and Heike Holtappel. The central role of doctor-patient communication for the success of therapy has now been confirmed in a follow-up project.
What makes a good patient-doctor dialogue and what difference can it make to the course of treatment? Students on the Master's degree programme in Health Sciences and Management addressed this question as part of a research project and changed their perspective - from the patient to the treating doctors.
Following the development of a flyer on preparing for consultations from the patient's perspective in a previous project, the experiences and assessments of doctors have now been analysed using qualitative interviews.
The key result: successful communication is also seen by doctors as a key factor for successful treatment. At the same time, it became clear that there is still a need for action in practice. The flyer that has already been developed was confirmed by the doctors surveyed as a helpful tool in everyday practice.
The students' project work was supervised by Prof. Dr Robert Renner, Professor of Health Promotion and Nutrition and head of the degree programme, and research assistant Heike Holtappel at the Faculty of Life Sciences - in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine.
