About the SemesterTicket

What is the SemesterTicket?

The SemesterTicket is a public transport pass for currently enrolled students of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and other universities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The SemesterTicket actually contains two separate tickets: the SemesterTicket VRR (your ticket for the Lower Rhine region) and the SemesterTicket NRW (for the other regions in North Rhine-Westphalia).

Please note that the SemesterTicket VRR and the SemesterTicket NRW have different conditions!

How long is the SemesterTicket valid?

The Semesterticket is valid for a single semester. You must purchase it again each semester with your semester fee. Students doing a work placement or studying abroad can apply for an exemption.

Where can I purchase the SemesterTicket?

The Semesterticket is automatically included in the semester fee you have to pay to re-register for a new semester. It can’t be purchased otherwise.

Where can I use the SemesterTicket?

The Semesterticket can be used on all surcharge-free bus and train lines in North Rhine-Westphalia. Note: it is not valid for use on Intercity Express (ICE) or Eurocity (EC) trains, nor for destinations outside of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The SemesterTicket is also valid for 2nd class seating only and upgrades to 1st class are not possible.

How do I use the SemesterTicket?

The SemesterTicket is only valid for the person it was issued to. The SemesterTicket is your transport ticket, but you will also need to carry valid photo ID (usually your passport) and your student ID to prove that you are entitled to use it.

Tickets are checked at random in German trains, so you should always carry these documents with you to avoid getting a fine for travelling without a ticket!

Can a friend and I travel with my SemesterTicket?

Yes, but only during certain times and within the territory of the VRR. Please contact the VRR directly for more information. Please note that you cannot travel with a friend outside of the territory of the VRR, as the SemesterTicket NRW has different conditions.
