Open Access

Open Access is the process of making academic information (e.g. academic publications or research data) accessible online without any financial, legal, or technical restrictions.

The advantages of Open Access can be various, such as:

  • free access to academic information
  • higher visibility and higher citation rate (impact) of publications
  • better retrieval of documents via search engines and other web services
  • rights of the published materials remain at the author(s)
  • long-term availability of documents through persistent identifiers (e.g. URN, PURL, DOI)

The Library of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences supports the Open Access publishing of academic information.

It is possible to publish academic information primarily via the inhouse OPUS Publication Server (Golden Open Access) or to archive it there as a so-called secondary publication (Green Open Access).

On the other hand, it is also possible to publish Open Access within so-called transformative agreements.

Especially at research-intensive universities such as Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, publication fees are causing rising costs for the provision of scientific information due to the increase in Open Access publications. In order to further expand the publication sector, a publication fund for expenses related to Open Access publications will therefore be available for the first time at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in the 2023 financial year.
