In the German-Dutch INTERREG IV A project “Wissensallianz Rhein-Waal 2020” (English: Knowledge Alliance Rhine-Waal 2020), research and educational institutions in the catchment area of the Euregio Rhine-Waal connect and network with regional commercial organisations. The aim of project is to ascertain the potential for innovation present in the Euregio Rhine-Waal and to mobilise it towards the long-term competitive success of the Lower Rhine region.

The Centre for Research, Innovation and Transfer and the Faculty of Communication and Environment of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences has developed a comprehensive scientific map of all presently active centres of knowledge, i.e. universities and research institutions, in the region. A subsequently developed web-based database allows companies and scientists to search for possible cooperative partners. Furthermore, cooperations between traditional universities and universities of applied sciences in the Euregio region are being expanded in order to promote student mobility between institutions, for example.

An additional important component of the project is entrepreneurship. To that end, successful and proven teaching concepts on entrepreneurship employed in the Netherlands were transferred and utilised by Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. Additionally, through our ‘iLAB’, short for innovationLAB Rhine-Waal, 15 well-developed knowledge-based products or start-up concepts received grant funding to continue pursuing their innovative goals and strategies.

In addition to Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the project is suppored by the following partners: Universität Duisburg-Essen, Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Wageningen Universiteit, Niederrheinische Industrie- und Handelskammer, Kamer van Koophandel and Euregio Rhein-Waal.

The project is planned for three years (mid-2012 to mid-2015) and has a total volume of EUR 4.9 million. It’s funded by the “INTERREG IV A Programme Deutschland-Nederland” with additional financing from the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) and the Ministerie Economische Zaken, Landbouw en Innovatie, the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, SMEs, Industry and Trades of North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the Dutch provinces Gelderland and Noord-Brabant. The Euregio Rhine-Waal is responsible for managing the programme.

The project work package of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is coordinated by Kristin Hendriksen and Karoline Kneist.
