1. Erasmus+ programme for all mobility arrangements

Programme overview

Erasmus+ is the EU-Programme in the fields of education, training, youth and sport. The programme contains three key actions:

  • Key action 1 – Learning mobility of individuals
  • Key action 2 – Innovation and good practice
  • Key action 3 – Support for policy reforms

Erasmus+ will provide 14.8 billion over seven years to strengthen education, training, youth and sport in Europe. More than 4 million young people, students and adults will gain experience and skills by studying, training or volunteering abroad through Erasmus+. Information on the Erasmus+ Programme can be found on the webpage of the European Commission

The funds are used principally to facilitate mobility in Europe and, since 2015, also to a small extent to strengthen mobility with other parts of the world. By 2020, around two million students shall have benefitted from Erasmus+, among them a quarter of a million students from Germany. Included are students of all study cycles including doctoral studies, who wish to complete part of their studies or an internship abroad. For the first time, students may be sponsored during their Bachelor, Master or doctorate programme for a period of up to 12 months. In order to enhance the financial incentive for a stay abroad the monthly mobility fee for students will be increased, particularly for host countries with higher living costs. Internships abroad after completion of an academic degree will also be possible in the future. Finally, Erasmus+ offers students who wish to study a complete master degree in Europe the possibility to receive a loan with low interest. The existing excellence funding from Erasmus Mundus which supports an entire Master’s degree of outstanding students for selected European Master’s programmes with a joint degree will be continued under Erasmus+.

Furthermore, Erasmus+ contributes to the further internationalization of the university via sponsoring short time lectureships and continued education stays for instructors and administrators. In addition, universities may invite corporate staff from abroad to teaching stays and may engage with other European partners (also from non-academic areas) in multilateral strategic partnerships and jointly develop innovative projects (e.g. in the field of curriculum development or of comprehensive educational themes).

Erasmus+ offers funding in the new science alliances for collaboration with industry. Universities wishing to engage in the field of capacity building in non-EU/EEA countries may do so through international university partnerships of the programme.

The subsidies for most of the mobility arrangements and strategic partnerships will be assigned by the national agencies in the 33 member countries (28 EU-countries and Island, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, and Turkey). In Germany this responsibility falls to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Under the umbrella of the EU education programme Erasmus+ the following mobility arrangements are sponsored:

  • Student Mobility for Studies (SMS)
  • Students Mobility for Traineeships (SMP)
  • Staff Mobility for Teaching (STA)
  • Staff Mobility for Training (STT)
