The duties of President of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences were originally assumed by Professor Dr Georg Hauck, Vice-President for Personnel and Organisational Development, Diversity, in September 2018. At the same time, a request was made to the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia to appoint an official representative to assume office on an interim basis. The appointee, Professor Dr Eberhard Menzel, has been officially approved and now enters office in an interim capacity until a new president elected by the University Election Assembly takes his place. “I view the task ahead as a challenge, one I would like to face together with the other members of the university. Many processes are long and complex and my appointment is only temporary. I’m well aware that, in some cases, I will only be able to lay the groundwork for future change,” said Professor Menzel.

Born in the town of Hemslingen in Lower Saxony, Professor Menzel’s earned a degree in electrical engineering from RWTH Aachen University before eventually assuming his first professorial appointment at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. He boasts a long and distinguished academic career that includes 25 years of teaching and research as a professor at various universities in Germany, four years as Vice-Rector for Research and Development Tasks, three years as dean of the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, and seven years as rector. He was also the founding president of Ruhr-West University of Applied Sciences and held office there for a total of six years. In particular during this period he gathered a wealth of experience with a university’s transition from initial establishment phase to a long-term consolidation phase, as well as the many organisational adjustments needed for a successful transition. For the last 14 years, Professor Menzel has also chaired the Board of Governors of Koblenz University of Applied Sciences and been CEO of the academic accreditation agency AQAS e.V.

Professor Menzel joins Vice-Presidents Professor Dr Georg Hauck, Professor Dr Jens Gebauer and Professor Dr Marion Halfmann as well as Chancellor Michael Strotkemper in the Executive Board of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
