Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, June 3, 2015: Music is everywhere. It surrounds us and shapes our day-to-day life – whether we want it to or not. We’re often exposed to music subconciously, not realising it but experiencing its effects later in a deeper, more profound way. Napoleon himself understood how music can carry messages and stir specific emotions, but this insight goes beyond him, stretching back centuries. How does modern science approach the topic? This upcoming Studium Generale lecture will shed light on this question by looking at music’s history as a “miracle cure” and a “secret code”.

Music is often looked at today as a key component for a healthy lifestyle. How does music affect and influence us, both as instrumentalist and listener? Voice is also an instrument; one which can be used in countless different ways and contexts. A healthy and well-trained voice is critical not just in communication careers, but elsewhere as well – music is often referred to as a “world language” for its ability to transcend cultural groups and barriers. This Studium Generale lecture will also look at the character of music as an instrument of communication, and the importance of this insight for a university that is deeply international and interdisciplinary by nature. Mr. Hendricks will offer glimpses into the innerworkings of the music research workshop at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and practical thoughts gathered during his many years of dedication to music. And of course, the music itself will also have a chance to “speak” to the audience in short performances spread throughout the presentation.

Studium Generale is a lecture series, held in German, which is open to students and staff of the university as well as the general public. It provides experts with an open forum to discuss important contemporary topics and inform a broad audience of interested parties. “Studium Generale offers students, staff and residents of the region alike the chance to participate in ongoing discussions in the scientific community. It’s also a nice opportunity to see our university from the inside and explore our modern campus facilities”, explains Dr. Heide Naderer, President of Rhine-Waal of Applied Sciences. “We warmly welcome anyone interested in attending the lectures in our current Studium Generale series.”

Studium Generale lectures are free to attend for all visitors.
