Prof Dr Marion Halfmann is the new dean

New leadership in the Faculty of Society and Economics: Professor Dr Marion Halfmann has assumed the post of Dean, Professor Dr Thomas Pitz the post of Vice-Dean, and Professor Dr Jakob Lempp the post of Vice-Dean of Studies.

Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, March 6, 2015: The Faculty of Society and Economics officially has a new dean: Professor Dr Marion Halfmann, who first joined the faculty and Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in September 2012 as Professor for Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing and Market-Oriented Management. Prof Dr Halfmann was elected for the position as dean by the Faculty Board in autumn 2014. “I’m pleased that the Faculty Board has entrusted me with this post and I’m very excited to see what tasks await”, commented Prof Dr Halfmann after officially assuming her new office dean.

A native of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Altena, Prof Dr Halfmann began her academic career at the University of Cologne, where she studied Business and Human Resource Education. In 1992, she earned the degree “Diplom-Kaufmann” and subsequently passed the First State Board Examination in Germany for teachers at upper secondary levels. Afterwards, she continued her career at the University of Cologne, earning a Ph.D. in Economics and Social Sciences while also employed as a research assistant at the university. Her thesis was “Commodity Flows in Manufacturing. Quantitative Planning under consideration of Ecological Aspects”.

Following a research stint at the University of California, Berkeley, Prof Dr Halfmann worked for several years as a business consultant at Simon Kucher & Partners as well as at Booz Allen Hamilton. In April 2004, Prof Dr Halfmann joined Cologne University of Applied Sciences as Professor of Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing, where she remained until September 2012, when she made the switch to Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.

Prof Dr Halfmann officially assumed the post of dean at the Faculty of Society and Economics on March 1, 2015, succeeding Prof Dr Hasan Alkas as dean. As the founding dean, Prof Dr Alkas has been instrumental in shaping the development of the entire Faculty of Society and Economics since first assuming the position on October 1, 2010. During his tenure, 29 professorships were created and the faculty’s seven study courses received accreditation (six undergraduate and one postgraduate). Prof Dr Alkas was supported by Prof Dr Ralf Klapdor as vice-dean, who assumed his post on December 17, 2010.

Prof Dr Alkas will remain in the Faculty of Society and Economics as Professor of Microeconomics with an emphasis on International Markets. Prof Dr Klapdor, Professor for Business Administration with a focus on International Tax Law, Financial Management and Controlling, will remain in his post as chairperson of the faculty’s Examination Board. Both professors would like to refocus their attention on achieving new research aims in their fields.
