As part of their course “Current Issues in Sustainable Development“, Master students from the study programme „Sustainable Development Management“ visited an art exhibition in mid-November. They were given a guided tour through the exhibition of works of Finnish artist Tea Mäkipää by Curator and Head Supervisor Dr. Alexander Grönert. Dr. Grönert explained the art objects and installations in much detail and took the time to address all our questions. The students were able to approach the topics of central importance to their studies from a different, rather unconventional angle. As it turned out to be the case, these topic blended in nicely with the core ideas behind Mäkipää’s art: consumerism, environmental degradation, and the (im-)possibility of more sustainable action. The manifold debates and questions raised made clear that art is but an ideal medium to get a discussion on such matters going! The students as well as Prof. Dr. Alexander Brand wish to thank Dr. Grönert for all his efforts – we felt welcome and learned a lot. Many thanks as well to the Course Coordinator Lena Passelewitz for having organised the visit to the museum.
