Prof. Dr.-Ing Ivan Volosyak

Walking into Ivan Volosyak’s laboratory you will hear a lot of “Let’s do it, let’s go for it,” signalling the kind of doer work ethic that he lives by and fosters in his students and research team.

From his academic background he holds a Diploma in automation and control of technical systems from the Dnepropetrovsk State University in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Bremen (UB) in Bremen, Germany. His project management skills can be traced back to UB where he led several national and European Union projects and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Automation. Furthermore he held visiting positions at the Institute for Knowledge Discovery, Graz University of Technology in Graz, Austria and at the Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering, Glasgow University in Glasgow, U.K.

Currently at Rhine-Waal University Ivan Volosyak is an accomplished research leader who has successfully managed third-party funded brain-computer interfacing projects like the ABCI, EBCI, BCI@Home and M³S among others. Currently he co-supervises 3 PhD students in cooperation with Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands) and Bielefeld University (Germany). As anyone taking the well-known microcontrollers and microprocessors courses at the university will tell you, Professor Volosyak likes to get straight to the point with his classes and he inspires students to stay ahead and work independently, while giving out extra hints to prepare them for the future career in the industry.

His other research interests include signal processing, digital image processing, service robotics, and assistive technology with the primary focus on applications in spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Based on the amount of brain-computer interfacing he does it is no surprise that his pastime activities include playing a good game of chess just to keep his brain extra sharp and he also enjoys spending time with his family.
