Dr. Klaus Krumme

Visiting Professor for Planning and Management of Sustainable Systems

Dr. Klaus Krumme is a transdisciplinary sustainability scholar residing in Essen with his wife and daughter. Most recently, he served as the Executive Director of the Joint Centre Urban Systems (JUS) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, an interdisciplinary institution dedicated to the research and sustainable development of cities and metropolitan areas, as part of the "Competence Field Metropolitan Research" (KoMet) of the University Alliance Ruhr. Currently, he is on leave there for the establishment of EUZENT.

Born in Dortmund in 1971, Klaus pursued studies in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Geography, and Philosophy at the universities of Bochum and Essen. He earned his doctorate in Economic Geography with a focus on Sustainability Sciences and Ecological Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

In 2004, Dr. Krumme co-founded the Sustainable Development Group (SuDeGroup) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, coordinating international projects for sustainable regional development and academic cooperation in sustainability sciences, with a focus on Nairobi and Meru (Kenya) as well as other African countries. From 2006 to 2019, he was the founding executive director of the Centre for Logistics & Transport (ZLV), playing a key role in developing the focus area "Urban Systems" at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

His research emphasizes sustainable economic practices, particularly through so-called social-ecological-technological systems (SETS) with applications in urban and regional development, supply systems, as well as logistics services. Dr. Krumme has been involved in a plethora of international research and exchange formats, as well as training programs sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Committee for Sustainability Research in Future Earth, and the European Union in Germany and Europe. His work extends beyond Europe, with focuses on the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa), East Africa, and Southeast Asia (especially Indonesia).

He is a co-founder and currently serves as the deputy chairman of the board of the non-profit DIALOGistik, a platform for education and training, sustainability, and innovative knowledge transfer in logistics (based at the Port of Duisburg), as well as a board member and founding member of the Green Deal Dataspace, a European-international organization promoting open data spaces for resilient and sustainable economic practices.
