On 17, 18 and 19 November Ms Sindy Mthimkhulu, CEO of Usuthu River Basin Authority, and Mr Musa Masilela from Swaziland, Water Manager at the Swaziland Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (SWADE) visited the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and held a three-day workshop on Poverty & Vulnerability for students of the Master Programme Sustainable Development Management, M.A..

During the workshop, students worked on a project proposal for international financing of a major real live project to improve the livelihoods of subsistence farmers in Swaziland. In this way students will encounter the everyday professional practice of working on vulnerability and poverty alleviation. After the workshop, students had to write a reflection report in which they reflect on the theory on poverty and vulnerability that they learned in the lectures so far, and the real live situations that they have been working on in the workshop.

Within Swaziland there is a transition going on from a centralized towards a decentralized and more sustainable way of water resource management. In order to profit from the Dutch experience in this field, Swaziland has a twinning relation with The Netherlands. In this context Mrs Mthimkhulu and Mr Masilela spend the week before in The Netherlands, where they participate in an international working conference together with colleagues from The Netherlands, Germany, South Africa and Mozambique.
