PEACE FOR SECURITY OR SECURITY FOR PEACE?
Student Conference for students staff and urban society
19. - 20. January 2018
Building 5A
In light of current developments in Europe and other parts of the world, it seems as if there is no shortage of threats to security. The securitisation of borders against refugees, a diffuse terrorist threat as well as rising sea levels and extreme weather phenomena are only a few examples. This situation demands a thorough discussion on the value of security vis à vis peace by scholars, practitioners and those who want to follow in their footsteps – or pioneer new paths towards peace and security. Are military interventions legitimate policies in the name of peace and future security? Are modern forms of warfare, e.g. drone strikes and cyber-attacks, more likely to contribute to peace and security in the long run because of an expected decrease in human casualties? This conference aims at discussing current efforts towards peace and security, assessing their legitimacy and chances for success.
