New Library Management System ALMA
Since August 2022, the library of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences has been working intensively on the changeover to the new, cloud-based library management system ALMA. Since May 2023, the project has been in a critical phase, which is why there will be restrictions on the use of the library over the course of the following months.
It is expected that all library services will be available again from Monday, 18.09.2023.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
What does the changeover mean for you?
Implementing a new management system is always a demanding task for library staff. All existing data must be cleansed and transferred and all system-side work processes need to be assessed and, where necessary, adjusted to fit the new system. In addition, numerous training seminars will be necessary for all library staff during the project period.
Due to the expected high workload in this regard, there may be reductions in library services from August 2022 to October 2023. For example, the library may be temporarily closed, service hours reduced, and questions and orders may require more processing time.
While we cannot guarantee that there will be no changes to our services in the coming months, we assure you we will do our best to avoid and/or keep any changes to a minimum whenever possible. We are contractually obligated to implement the project over its entire duration and thus must set certain priorities during this time. Naturally, we will always notify you in a timely manner of any changes before they occur.
What is a library management system?
The library management system is the central administration software of the library. It is used, for example, to control core processes such as borrowing, renewal and reservation of media and to manage user data. The library management system is also used for the acquisition and management of electronic and physical media.
Why ALMA?
The cloud-based library management system ALMA was identified in a Europe-wide tender as a suitable system to create a uniform state-wide digital infrastructure for all university libraries in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to the possibility of collaborative work in the cloud and the use of common interfaces, ALMA optimises internal processes, such as the management of electronic media.
