3.2 Post Your Science – Content Creation for Scientists
Scientists are experts at presenting their research to the academic community through papers or conference talks. They are used to relying on complex sentences, parenthetical statements, technical terms, and footnotes. However, good social media content requires skills that go beyond this.
In social media posts, scientists must capture the readers' attention right from the first sentence, write from a personal perspective, and stick to one core message per post. This approach can feel unfamiliar to researchers, but with the right tips, it can be quickly implemented.
In this online workshop, scientists will learn how to communicate their research in an accessible way to a broader audience. They will develop an efficient workflow for their own content production, try out different social media tools, and learn how to confidently handle hate speech if it arises.
Key Topics:
- Reflecting on your own communication strategy on social media
- Developing an editorial plan and content ideas for effective social media posts
- Learning principles of science communication and conveying core messages
- Writing social media posts, receiving feedback, and posting online
- Responding confidently to criticism
- Focusing on platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, X, Bluesky & Mastodon
Participants should already have their own social media profile and have published some initial posts. The social network used to create posts during the workshop is freely chosen by the participants.
Note: The workshop focuses on creating written social media posts (plus supporting graphics). The practical creation of video content will NOT be covered.
