‘By appointing Dr med Joachim van Alst the University gains a dedicated personality and distinguished practitioner for the education of our students,’ President Dr Heide Naderer explains upon handing over the certificate of appointment. ‘We are pleased to welcome a lecturer to our faculty who is exceptionally qualified to convey the professional and interdisciplinary requirements of his area of expertise.’ Professor Dr Matthias Kleinke, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, adds delightedly.

Ever since the summer semester of 2011 Dr van Alst has regularly been giving lectures on Epidemiology and Fire Safety at Rhine-Waal University, in addition to providing valuable content-related contributions to further modules. Meanwhile he has not only earned his student’s and colleague’s respect as lecturer, but has also dedicated significant effort — well beyond his normla duties — to the advancement of the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes Quality, Environment, Safety and Hygiene, B.Sc., Bio Science and Health, B.Sc. as well as Health Sciences and Management, M.Sc.

Drawing on his extensive expertise the distinguished physician is committed to teaching Fire Safety, Civil Protection, Blood Transfusion Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Emergency Management, offering the students of Rhine-Waal University a both theoretical as well as hands-on approach to understanding the respective subject.

A productive collaboration between academia and healthcare lies at the heart of his commitment, explains Dr van Alst: ‘It is important to ensure that students about to enter a profession are as optimally prepared as possible regarding both the latest practical as well as scientific knowledge. Safety and quality issues are becoming more and more important for the healthcare sector. Focusing on this link between education and employment, I would like to contribute by providing graduates of Rhine-Waal University with an interdisciplinary and multifaceted training. And said interdisciplinary approach is already bearing fruit. As part of the module Fire Safety students are offered the opportunity to achieve the qualification of Voluntary Fireman in cooperation with the VDS Schadensverhütung GmbH, and work on additional training programmes is already under way.’
