As part of its third edition, the annual Dutch International Science Film Festival InScience in Nijmegen will once again showcase a variety of carefully selected science films, ranging from documentary to animation, and for the first time Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences has come on board as a partner. “We are very pleased to engage in this new cooperation with our neighbors. This partnership not only illustrates the importance we place on cross-border activities in the region, but also our commitment as a university of applied sciences to harness every opportunity for the communication of scientific topics”, Dr. Heide Naderer, President of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, explains.

The Dutch International Science Film Festival InSience originates from a joint initiative of Radboud University with the Arthouse LUX as the largest arthouse cinema in the Netherlands. The organizers of the annual festival, taking place since 2015, seek to attract the widest possible audience and encourage a dialogue between science, the arts and society. InScience aspires to be a platform offering new ways of communicating and sharing scientific ideas. Consequently, the festival’s program rounds up the best of this year’s science films along with hosting science-related events like panel discussions, workshops, interactive performances and exhibitions. In addition, the festival hosts a prestigious international competition honoring two science films with the NTR Audience Award, sponsored by the Dutch public-service broadcaster NTR, as well as the Student Award.

The festival will take place from November 8 to 12 in Nijmegen. This year’s festival theme ‘No facts, no future’ is intended to take a stand for science in the age of ‘alternative facts’. “In light of this year’s theme, this cooperation is particularly important to us, which is why we hope to attract wide interest of both students and staff of our University”, Dr. Naderer points out. In addition, plans have already been made to organize a special event showcasing a ‘best of’-selection of the InScience program, thus crossing the border to the German side in the coming year. “Such an event will not only underline the importance of this partnership to Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, but also give us an opportunity to promote our ongoing ambitions of making scientific subjects known to a wider public”, President Naderer illuminates.
