Rhine-Waal University Strengthens Partnership with Fitchburg State University

From October 13 to 18, a delegation from Rhine-Waal University visited Fitchburg State University to deepen cooperation between the two institutions and further strengthen the longstanding sister-city relationship between Kleve and Fitchburg. This partnership has been in place since 2002 and was further enhanced in 2005 through reciprocal visits of political delegations and the establishment of an annual “Kleve Day” in Fitchburg on August 19. Dr. Joshua Spero, together with Nelly Wadsworth, hosted this year’s visit of the Rhine-Waal University delegation.

One of the highlights of the visit was a meeting with Dr Donna Hodge, the new president of Fitchburg State University, who places great emphasis on expanding international partnerships. For several years now, the cooperation has enabled students in International Business Administration to earn degrees at both institutions. Paras Kumar, the first student from Kleve to spend a semester in Fitchburg, expressed his enthusiasm for this unique opportunity.

In addition to meetings with university officials, the delegation also met with Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squailia and State Representative Michael Kushmerek, who are both interested in strengthening the connection between the two cities. During the reception hosted by the president, discussions included a potential joint visit to Kleve, which could coincide with a planned political science student excursion led by Dr Spero.

A lecture by Professor Dr Alexander Brand on the German perspective regarding the upcoming U.S. presidential elections sparked lively discussions. Additionally, Professor Dr Irmgard Buder gave a guest lecture on sustainability, followed by an introduction to Rhine-Waal University by Professsor Dr Klaus Hegemann, Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Environment. The visit not only strengthened the university partnership but also provided fresh momentum for the more than 20-year-long sister-city relationship between Kleve and Fitchburg.
