Online Self-Assessments

As part of the i2 project, a new online platform for online self-assessments (OSAs) is being developed together with an external partner. The CIL project team is responsible for coordinating this subproject, taking relevant study-related and socio-cultural content from the faculties and central organisational units and funnelling them into OSAs.

The goal of i2 project – and thus the OSA subproject – is to better confront the challenges faced by international students at German universities thus preparing and recruiting them earlier and more effectively for both regional and state (NRW) labour markets.

These online self-assessments will better prepare students for the realities of living and studying in Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort by giving an authentic look at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and softening the culture shock international students can feel when their expectations don’t match reality. The overarching goal is to increase the number of students at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences with the appropriate level of qualitative characteristics and study-related aptitude, resulting in higher graduation rates over the long-term.

As part of the i2 project, the OSA team is developing online self-assessments focused on both general socio-cultural information about student life in Germany and information specific to degree programmes at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. The programme-related contents will be developed together with the heads of select degree programmes in the faculties.

The objectives of the online self-assessments:

  • Better prepare and integrate international students.
  • Communicate realistic ideas and expectations for studying and living in Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort.
  • Increase the number of students with the right qualitative abilities.
  • Improve the study-related aptitude of new students, resulting in a smoother study experience and higher graduation rates.

The idea:

  • For whom? New international students
  • What? OSAs for bachelor’s degree programmes taught in English with information about the programme and socio-cultural realities in Germany
  • Programme-related contents: Comparing expectations with regard to study requirements | Insights from current students and teaching staff | Examples of test questions | Career chances and opportunities after graduation
  • Socio-cultural contents: Comparing expectations with regard to socio-cultural conditions in Germany | Types of teaching and examinations | Mindset | Everyday life in Kleve & Kamp-Lintfort | Stories from current students & support services at HSRW
