Together with the inviolability of human dignity and general freedom of the person, this article safeguards the private space of individuals so that they can live autonomously and in peace. This protection also extends to the front gardens of any buildings which, as is easily visible here, are a part of a person's private living space.

The photograph depicts a typical living situation in the Eigelstein neighbourhood of Cologne. Eigelstein sits today on what was the first section of the ancient Limes Road built by Rome, which led from Cologne's north gate to what is now the city of Neuss. Eigelstein is also home to Stavenhof street, which that was known for its brothels until the 70s and has since seen extensive redesign and transformation. Here, a renter enjoys the afternoon in his front garden, like many of his neighbours. Though members of the public may walk by his garden every day, he knows that his right to privacy is protected by law.
