3.1 International Teaching Design

Meeting the challenges of culturally sensitive teaching

A high level of diversity and internationality among students and teaching staff facilitates the creation of multicultural spaces conducive to interactive learning and research. The diverse academic teaching and learning cultures that exist can influence the expertise, comprehension and participation of those involved.

This workshop is designed to support teaching staff in navigating the complexities of international teaching and learning contexts at the HSRW. The one-day online format is structured as a content-organised and moderated space for input, reflection and exchange of experience with a particular focus on addressing the challenges of cultural diversity in multinational teaching environments.

The objective is to identify strategies that facilitate the learning of culturally diverse student groups without inadvertently disadvantaging or favouring any particular group. This entails examining the individual teaching concept to ascertain how to effectively address potential discrepancies in communication skills and prior knowledge among students.

A further area of interest is the role of methodological approaches in facilitating the integration of students with culturally diverse backgrounds.

The application of established techniques such as "cultural mapping" can assist in addressing these inquiries, offering an effective approach to culturally aware pedagogical practice. A process of reflection on previous teaching and learning practice is offered as a means of positioning oneself effectively within the context of the HSRW.
