The future of Germany as a business location is increasingly focusing on universities of applied sciences – particularly in the field of practice-oriented research. As a young and innovative institution, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences focuses on application-oriented, interdisciplinary research projects.
The Faculty of Society and Economics is characterised by its strong practical focus and promotes close integration of teaching, research, entrepreneurship and the political framework. Students apply their theoretical knowledge in practical projects and state-of-the-art laboratories. The Faculty offers access to state-of-the-art technology such as SPSS, Questback, LogSquare, and mobile and stationary eye-tracking systems, which are used in both internal research projects and external collaborations.
The faculty’s aim is to forge even closer links between business and academia in order to drive innovation and unlock economic potential. This vision is reflected not only in the international outlook of the students but also in the numerous global research collaborations.

The Faculty of Society and Economics combines applied research with practical solutions to today’s challenges. Working closely with companies and organisations from around the world, we conduct research into current topics such as labour migration, emotional labour, identity development and artificial intelligence. Our three centres of excellence – for applied economic research, social transformation and innovative teaching – pool expertise to drive sustainable change and actively shape the future. Research projects
Our mission: research with real-world relevance
In a society increasingly characterised by complexity and diversity, it is becoming ever more important to establish interdisciplinary approaches in research. Only by linking different academic disciplines can we effectively address the challenges of the present and develop forward-looking solutions. A central aim of our research projects is therefore not only to expand existing Degree programmes, but also to link the various disciplines with one another in order to create synergies and open up new perspectives.
To encourage creative and innovative thinking, we offer our students a practice-oriented, research-based education. A state-of-the-art laboratory facility ensures that students not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also gain practical experience. Even whilst still studying, they are involved in the faculty’s current research projects and can incorporate their own ideas and findings into their final theses.
Our aim is to actively contribute to solving socially relevant problems through applied, practice-oriented research in collaboration with regional institutions and businesses. The state-of-the-art equipment in our laboratories enables a wide range of investigative methods across various research areas. From behavioural experiments that shed light on economic and social issues to innovative recording and analysis of information systems using eye-tracking systems – our research methods offer new insights into complex interrelationships and provide valuable data for sustainable solutions.
