Profile
My name is Matteo Große-Kampmann. I am a professor of Distributed Systems at the Kamp-Lintfort campus and currently serve as vice dean of the Faculty of Communication and Environment. I earned my Ph.D. in systems security from Ruhr University Bochum.
My work lies at the intersection of technical IT security research and the question of how to reliably measure the security and privacy properties of large, distributed systems.
I am currently advising four doctoral students in cooperation with the Doctoral School NRW, of which I am a full member. In addition to my academic publications, I regularly serve on the program committees of international security and privacy conferences, including NDSS, PETS, RAID, ACSAC, ESORICS, and ACNS.
Before joining Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, I was the CEO and founder of AWARE7. Together with Chris Wojzechowski, I published two books on digital security with Wiley in German: „Meine digitale Sicherheit für Dummies" (2024) and „Meine digitale Sicherheit — Tipps und Tricks für Dummies" (2021).

My research focuses on the analysis of security and privacy in distributed systems.
- Observing Web measurements and their methodology with regard to the reproducibility and replicability of web measurement studies, as well as the impact of different experimental setups on the results.
- Investigating tracking and transparency mechanisms in various ecosystems, such as HbbTV or regional filter lists.
- I study phishing and security awareness through large-scale analyses of phishing simulations across various industries.
- Security of connected devices, such as smart ring ecosystems or mobile childcare apps.
- We examine large language models in security-critical contexts by using LLMs as domain-specific retrieval agents, as well as biases and educational risks in automated voting advice.
My work has been published in international, peer-reviewed venues including the ACM Internet Measurement Conference (IMC), the ACM Web Conference, the Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium (PETS), the IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN), and the ACM Asia Conference on Computer and Communications Security (AsiaCCS).
In addition, I am currently very interested in research methodologies, creativity in the scientific process, and teaching with and without AI. I’m always happy to discuss these topics.
