You can only apply for a Bachelor’s degree programme at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences in the winter semester.
As soon as the application period begins, you can submit your application online. Once you have submitted your application, you will be given an application number. You should quote this number in all further correspondence with the university.
A Bachelor’s degree programme is either open-access or subject to restricted admission. Open-access means that you can simply enrol if you meet the formal requirements, such as the Abitur or Fachhochschulreife – your grades do not matter. A degree programme with restricted admission, on the other hand, usually means there are more applicants than places available. Once the application deadline has passed, applicants are selected according to specific criteria, often based on the numerus clausus (NC), i.e. your final school-leaving grade.

For degree programmes with open admission, you will automatically be offered a place once you have submitted your online application. Your Letter of Admission and all the important information regarding Enrolment are available to download from the Application portal.
You only accept your place on the course once you have officially completed enrolment.
If you obtained your University entrance qualification (UEQ) outside Germany, please see the section ‘Applying with a school leaving certificate from outside Germany’.
For degree programmes with restricted admission, there are only a limited number of places available. If the number of applications exceeds the number of places available, a selection process will take place. Places are allocated in accordance with the regulations of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Following the selection process, you will receive either:
- a letter of admission or
- a letter of rejection.
If you are offered a place, you must enrol at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences within the specified deadline. Only then is your place on the course secured.
Admission letters for degree programmes with restricted admission are usually sent out at the beginning of August.
Waiting list procedure
Sometimes, applicants who have been offered a place do not take it up. In this case, the vacant places are allocated through the waiting list procedure.
This process usually begins in late August or early September. If you have applied by the deadline, you will automatically be included in the process.
If places are still available after this, a lottery may also be held.
Degree programmes with the DoSV procedure
Some Bachelor’s degree programmes are allocated via the Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) run by the Foundation for University Admissions.
These include:
- Bioengineering, B.Sc.
- Engineering for Sustainability, B.Sc.
- Infotronic Systems Engineering, B.Sc.
- International Business Administration, B.A.
- International Business and Management, B.A.
- International Relations, B.A.
- Mobility and Logistics, B.Sc.
If you wish to apply for one of these degree programmes, you must first register at hochschulstart.de. There you will receive an applicant ID (BID) and an applicant authentication number (BAN).
You can then use these details to apply via Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences application portal or via uni-assist.
Once you have received your offer of admission, you must apply for enrolment via the university’s application portal and upload the following documents, amongst others:
- Proof of sufficient English language proficiency for English-taught degree programmes
University entrance qualification obtained in Germany (e.g. the German Abitur):
Proof is usually provided by your school leaving certificate. - University entrance qualification obtained outside Germany:
