Prof. Dr. Dirk Bockmühl

Hygiene at home - of men and microbes

Born in Wuppertal, Dirk Bockmühl studied biology in Dusseldorf and did his PhD in microbiology on the human pathogenic fungus Candida albicans.

Professionally, he remained in Dusseldorf working in various positions at the Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, first as a laboratory manager in corporate research, then, after a brief excursion into research management, he took over the responsibility for the platform "hygiene and allergies" in the international research and development for detergents and cleaners.

The issue of hygiene in its various aspects still fascinates him after he changed for the University of Rhine-Waal in October 2010 to the Faculty of Life Sciences which he represented as the dean from November 2011 to October 2013. The scope of his research projects ranging from the question which microorganisms are living in the domestic, to the development of new test methods, e.g. for testing antimicrobial agents.

He is a member of the extended board of the GDCh Section "Chemistry of washing" and the advisory board of the SEPAWA e.V. He is also a member of the Association of General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM) and the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM).
