HSRW DataSustain Lab

This is where research, teaching and societal impact relating to open data, environmental data and sustainability come together. The aim is to pool specialist expertise from various disciplines in order to develop data-driven solutions to local and regional challenges. The focus is on the processing and analysis of environmental and open data, which are examined within a holistic, interdisciplinary context. As a practice-oriented learning and research space, the laboratory brings together students, researchers and external partners who jointly develop and implement sustainable projects.

Objective

The DataSustain Lab combines data science methods with domain-specific knowledge to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. Working in interdisciplinary teams, data from various sources is analysed, contextualised using modern technologies such as machine learning, and translated into scientifically sound, practice-relevant insights.

Key Research Areas

  • More efficient use of open data: applying innovative data science methods to optimise the analysis of available data and utilising open data to measure progress towards the SDGs at a local level.
  • Integration of complex data sources: Combining data with different temporal and spatial coverage to draw new, scientifically sound conclusions.
  • Preservation and processing of historical data: Identifying, preparing and utilising valuable data series from ephemeral data carriers using modern technologies to ensure long-term availability and analysis.
  • Citizen science: Involving the public in data collection to promote participatory research.
