Portfolio Assessment

To assess your artistic and creative aptitude, we need to see examples of your work. Please submit a portfolio containing ten creative pieces. You will receive the upload link after you have successfully registered.

Your portfolio should give us an impression of who you are and what interests you creatively. You are free to choose your own themes and the techniques you use. What matters most is that your work demonstrates your interest in design and your creative potential. Your ideas should be clear and understandable, even without additional explanation.

We are particularly interested in your originality and creativity, so don’t be afraid to take risks and think outside the box. We are looking for strong ideas and concepts rather than perfect execution – the practical skills will be developed during your studies.

Your portfolio will be assessed on the basis of your powers of observation, originality and ability to communicate ideas visually. We generally advise against submitting traditional observational drawings that simply aim to reproduce reality as accurately as possible, as they reveal too little about you and your creative potential.

You are free to present your work in any medium, including painting, drawing, writing, collage, photography, film or three-dimensional design. Choose the methods that best suit the way you like to work. Drawing skills are not a requirement for admission. However, if drawing is one of your strengths, you are welcome to demonstrate it in your portfolio.

Your portfolio does not need to follow a single theme.

We will be happy to answer your questions in writing by email to portfolio-ICD(at)hsrw.eu. For a personalised consultation, please have a PDF file ready containing your work samples (all work in a single file, max. 10 MB).

The deadline for submitting portfolios for the start of the 26/27 winter semester has passed. However, we look forward to receiving your application during the next application period which will be announced here in good time.

You will be notified of the outcome of your application by email shortly after your portfolio has been assessed. Please also check your spam folder for any emails that may have been filtered out by mistake.

In order to be granted enrolment, you must also apply via the university’s online application portal. If you do not have a German entry qualification to higher education, please use uni-assist to start the enrolment process. Please note that the online application is mandatory.
