Flow sensor
Fluctomation is a start-up project in the seed phase at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, which has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the “START-UP University Spin-offs” programme.
The aim of the project is to prepare a university spin-off based on the research work of Dr Claudio Abels. The project is supported by a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers and consultants from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and the Centre of Biomolecular Nanotechnologies at the Italian Institute of Technology. The scientific outcome of this international collaboration is an innovative, miniaturised flow sensor that functionally replicates the lateral line organs found in fish.
Applications
To improve the capabilities of modern flow measurement in the fields of industrial automation and robotics, future machines could be equipped with a large number of miniaturised flow sensors distributed across their surface. Densely packed sensor arrays can enable high-resolution measurement of the surrounding air or water flow, in various other media such as oil, and under harsh flow conditions such as those found in hot liquids. The key feature of our technical solution lies in the system integration of our patented, microscopic hair sensors with low-voltage electronics and signal processing into a real-time measuring device that enables multi-parameter ‘remote sensing’ within one-dimensional tubes, on two-dimensional surfaces, and around and within three-dimensional objects.
