Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Bachelor’s Thesis by Julian Peschel

Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust is based on Julian Peschel’s interest in geography in general as well as cartography and topography in particular. The aesthetics of satellite imagery of volcanoes initiated the idea to focus on volcanism in its various manifestations. Mankind always had to deal with the calamitous eruptions but also learned to benefit from fertility and exuberant growth, the positive side effects of this genuinely disastrous natural force. Many aspects and views of this fascinating paradox of creative destruction can be explored by many aspects and views, both in science and design. Due to the multitude of volcanoes, this process depends on various factors. His approach was to amalgamate data of all active volcanoes and translate these into a visual form of representation.
