The University is awarded its first ’Familiengerechte Hochschule’ certificate
Becoming a certified ‘family-friendly university’ involves an extensive audit process, which Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences successfully completed in 2015. The audit, an initiative of the non-profit Hertie Foundation, is a strategic management instrument designed to encourage sustainable improvements to workplace structures and policies relating to employees’ and students’ work-life balance. With this certification, the Executive Board of the University sent a clear message about the importance of a family-friendly work environment, as well as its commitment to ensuring an ever improving family-friendly environment through appropriate measures.
The successful conclusion of the first family-friendly audit at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences shows that the University has laid a good foundation for family-friendly policies during its initial establishing phase, and these policies have not been neglected in the meantime. This certificate, however, is just the beginning. Now it’s time to begin shaping and implementing the many measures enshrined in the objective agreement produced by the audit.
A number of measures are planned for implementation in the coming three years, which will give employees and students more freedom to find a healthy balance between work and life. For employees, for example, measures ensuring more flexibility in both the hours and place of work will be investigated and specific areas of the University organisation will be bolstered with reliable and clear guidelines. For students with families, new measures are planned to improve both study conditions and organisational flexibility. All members of the University are invited to actively support the planning and implemented stages with fresh ideas and hands-on support.
The certification is valid through 2018. Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is dedicated to a long-term and continuous process of improvement. We are confident that the measures implemented in the meantime will ensure a smooth re-certification for 2019 and beyond.
