Portfolio assessment
In order to be admitted to the degree course Information and Communication Design, candidates must pass the aptitude test regarding their artistic/creative capability, as well as presenting corresponding university entrance qualifications. The aptitude test serves to ascertain whether candidates are suitable for studying a creative subject.
The following should be submitted:
1. Application portfolio
In order to assess your artistic/creative capability, we need to see some examples of your work. Please submit a portfolio with 10 creative examples. They should give an impression of you and your interests, so that it is important for you to decide for yourself which topic you would like to focus on and which presentation techniques you would like to use. The main objective is to visualise your interest in design and your fundamental creative talent. Your work should convey what you are trying to say without the need for any additional explanation.
However, what we really want to see is how far your imagination and resourcefulness go: your work can scarcely be too daring or too unconventional. What count are your concepts and ideas, not perfect technique – that is what you will learn on the course.
The submitted work will be assessed according to the following criteria: powers of observation, imagination and presentation skills. We recommend that you do not submit factual drawings featuring a lifelike reproduction of an object, as these do not reveal enough about you and your talent.
The work can consist of paintings, drawings, texts, collages, photographs, films or 3D. Any means of representation is permitted. Simply use the methods that you like working with. The ability to draw is explicitly not a prerequisite for a place on the course: but if you can draw well, you should be prepared to use your talent.
Format, submission
The 10 pieces of work do not have to address an overriding topic. Submit your work in a portfolio measuring maximum 50 x 70 cm. Please remember to put your name on all pieces of work and on the portfolio itself. You can also submit your work by post. Please do not forget to submit the completed, signed application form with your portfolio. Please also note that we cannot send your portfolio back to you; however, you can collect your portfolio from us in person. In exceptional cases (e.g. candidates applying from abroad), you may submit your work in digital form as PDF. In this case, it is vital for you to contact us in advance to clarify how to submit the data.
2. Application form
You are also asked to complete the enclosed application form and to submit it with your portfolio.
